What Is Truth?

Posted by thelamp on July 21, 2006

A question was posed to Jesus just hours before he was crucified, “What is Truth”?

People everywhere are looking for direction or purpose for their lives.  There are many books out there such as the Purpose Driven Life and Your Best Life Now as well as others who inspire people to trust in themselves, rely upon their strength, and listen to your heart.  Often though people will continue to seek a direction for life.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding.  In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths”.  Truly if we rely on God, He will give us direction.  He will always give us the truth.

Often I have heard people–and I was guilty of this myself–say, I know where I am going.  They purpose a “truth” into their lives.  Often, however, that truth gets changed and altered.  Eventually many find themselves off course.  What we need are guideposts to help us find our way.

But can we trust in those guideposts?  Back in World War II around the time of the Battle of the Bulge German soldiers would dress up in US or US allied troop uniforms and tell them to go a certain direction which would lead to an ambush.  We have the same thing going on today.  No longer are people made aware of life having choices and those choices have consequences and we are held in account for those choices.  II Timothy 4:3-4 declares, “For the time will come when they will not endure (trust) sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears (give me a message about being happy and I can be a champion if I trust in myself), they will heap up for themselves teachs; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.”  This was spoken after this was said, “For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong (stubborn), haughty, lovers of pleasure…” (II Timothy 3:2-4).

There are people who we trust who will not lead us astray.  We have our President, our governor, our mayor, our boss, our pastor who we know will give us clarity.  If I may throw a bit of caution, it would be this.  Hebrews 13:17, “Obey those who rule over you (in other words, no rebellion, anarchy, or mutiny), and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account.  Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.”  In other words, be careful with direction, wisdom, advice, instruction, “sermon” you give because not only could they fall but you will, too.

I think Jesus coined it best when He looked upon the people with compassion for they were scattered like sheep having no shephard. I believe that is the way modern evangelism has brought people to: lost sheep. This world–those who have not accepted Jesus Christ in their lives–is also lost. Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send forth laborers.
