Teachers’ Union Gives Thumbs Up to Same-Sex Marriage

Posted by thelamp on July 14, 2006

Representatives of the nation’s largest teachers’ union last week gave its stamp of approval to same-sex marriages and other civil unions. You couldn’t write a better advertisement for Christian schools, charter schools and home schooling than the National Education Association’s action in Orlando.

Delegates to the NEA’s 85th Representative Assembly approved a resolution stating that race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identification, disability, ethnicity, immigration status, occupation and religion “should not affect the legal rights of the partners in a legally recognized domestic partnership, civil union or marriage in regard to matters involving the other partner, such as medical decision, taxes, inheritance, adoption and immigration” (emphasis added). This strengthened a section of the NEA handbook in which the union formally opposes discrimination based on factors including race, gender, sexual orientation or gender identification.

Delegates actually made two votes in favor of this resolution last week – denying a proposal to have it referred back to a committee for more study before approving the resolution.

This isn’t the end of the union’s pro-gay activities, either; NEA actually has a Committee on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identification, which issued a report during the convention stating that the union should “advocate for the inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues in the ‘National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education’ teacher education program review process.”

Parents of children in public school should take note of the actions of America’s public-school teachers. It’s reasonable to conclude that students will soon learn lessons about human sexuality and social engineering that their parents would rather they learn only from them, or not at all.

Meanwhile, Christian members of the NEA face a stark choice – either leave the union that represents them in most public school districts in America, or continue to let their dollars go to support an organization that prioritizes homosexual rights – seemingly over the welfare of the children they are employed to serve.
