Parental Rights at Stake with Child Custody Protection Act

Posted by thelamp on July 14, 2006

Values voters are needed to prod the U.S. Senate to prompt action in passing the Child Custody Protection Act, an important bill that would reinforce parental rights where their daughters’ health is concerned.

The law, S. 8, sponsored by U.S. Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., would make it a federal crime to transport a minor to another state to have an abortion. This would reinforce laws that exist in at least 30 states which require that parents be notified or give consent before their minor daughters undergo an abortion. The House of Representatives has already passed its version of the bill.

“This is a states’ rights issue,” said Pastor Rod Parsley, founder and president of the Center for Moral Clarity. “States that have chosen to protect parental rights by requiring consent or notification before a minor child has an abortion have done so out of concern for the well-being of everyone involved – the unborn child, the mother and the mother’s parents. Going across state lines to get around a state law should be a criminal offense, and this bill would make it so.

“I urge the Senate to do the necessary work to pass this bill promptly. There is no reason why this common-sense proposal can’t become law this year.”
