Israel, Palestine Open New Era of Talks

Posted by thelamp on July 14, 2006

Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met in Jordan last week with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The meeting was inconclusive, but both men promised to convene again in the next few weeks. The meeting was the first between the sides since Olmert’s election as Prime Minister.

Olmert made it clear after the meeting that substantive peace negotiations will depend on the willingness of Hamas, a terrorist group which is in control of Palestine’s parliament, to disavow violence and recognize Israel’s right to exist – positions it has steadfastly held. Indeed, Hamas officially criticized Abbas for meeting with Olmert “amid the continuing Palestinian blood of Zionist massacres.”

Olmert is continuing to plan to unilaterally determine final borders for Israel in the future if necessary, but is open to negotiations with the Palestinian Authority.

CMC urges its members and all Christians to pray for the peace and security of Israel.
