Congress and the President Show Respect for Grieving Families

Posted by thelamp on July 14, 2006

President Bush May 29 signed the “Respect for America’s Fallen Heroes Act,” which will prevent disruptive protests during military funerals at 122 national cemeteries. His action came less than a week after both houses of Congress passed the bill overwhelmingly. CMC thanks Congress and the President for acting quickly on a common-sense measure.

The new law will forbid protests within 300 feet of the entrance to a federal cemetery and within 150 feet of the roads into those cemeteries one hour before, during and one hour after a funeral. It was passed largely in response to the actions of a Kansas-based church, which has used military funerals as a forum for its hate-filled rhetoric against homosexuals.

Dozens of states have already passed or are considering similar laws. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed suit to invalidate the funeral-protest law in Kentucky, saying it goes too far in muzzling protestors.
