Arizona, Pennsylvania Need Values Voters’ Help On Marriage Amendments

Posted by thelamp on July 14, 2006

Six states – Idaho, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Wisconsin – will vote Nov. on constitutional amendments defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Two other states, Arizona and Pennsylvania, are preparing similar initiatives, but need the timely help of values voters to succeed.

If you live in one of these critical states, your righteous action is needed now! Here’s what to do:

  • In Arizona, organizers are facing a July 6 deadline to gather signatures of registered voters to qualify for their ballot issue. To join the effort to get the Arizona Marriage Amendment on the November ballot, call Protect Marriage Arizona at 602-978-0737 or toll-free 1-866-48MARRIAGE. You can also reach the coalition here.
  • The battle for marriage is also on in Pennsylvania, where the House and Senate have passed differing versions of an amendment. Language for the amendment passed last week in the state Senate is weaker than what passed earlier in the House because while it defines marriage correctly as the union of one man and one woman, it opens the door for legalized civil unions of same-sex couples. Marriage proponents have until this Friday, June 30, for both houses of the state legislature to pass the same amendment language. Under state law, the same amendment language then will need to be passed in Pennsylvania’s next legislative session to qualify for the 2007 ballot. Click here for more information.
