This is the Last Week! Sign the Petition Now

Posted by thelamp on November 6, 2006

For three years, babies have continued to lose their lives even though Congress passed a ban against partial-birth abortion, President Bush signed the legislation and 70 percent of Americans agree this procedure should be outlawed. In just a few days, the Supreme Court will finally hear the argument defending this life-saving legislation.

Sign the CMC Petition to the U.S. Supreme Court

In November 2003, President Bush signed the baby-killing ban into law, but federal judges in California, Nebraska and New York each issued temporary restraining orders to prevent its enforcement. The Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the American Civil Liberties Union joined in the fray on behalf of four abortion providers.

They filed lawsuits alleging the law is unconstitutional because it does not include a “health exception,” which would permit the procedure under certain circumstances. Instead of a health exception, the law includes a long “findings” section with medical evidence presented in congressional hearings that indicates the procedures banned by the law are never medically necessary. Two of these lawsuits are cases the U.S. Supreme Court will hear on Nov. 8.

Thousands of babies are counting on you to be their voice, and you can do so by clicking here to sign the PBA Petition, which is the last opportunity people passionate about life have to let the Supreme Court know they indeed want this ban enforced. America needs the ban on partial-birth abortions. Once the Center for Moral Clarity sends the petitions to the court, the only action remaining is prayer. Please pray for the lawyers presenting the case for life. Pray that they will persuade the court to allow Congress to legislate. Pray they will be champions in the legal battle for life.

Nothing Holy About New Jersey Ruling on Matrimony

Posted by thelamp on November 6, 2006

Couples in New Jersey, regardless of the mates’ gender, are entitled to the same legal and financial protections as men and women united in traditional holy matrimony. That absurd ruling was announced last week by the New Jersey Supreme Court.

It’s infuriating. Judges with their own agendas are thumbing their noses at lawmakers and the people who elected them. Same-sex marriage is being forced upon the majority of Americans by a small group of wayward people. Make no mistake, homosexual activists won’t stop until they have dismantled this sacred institution. A federal Marriage Protection Amendment would stop this nonsense.

The future of families is at stake. Christians can no longer be subdued. They must speak now or forever live with the consequences. The biblical definition of what constitutes holy matrimony is the union of a man and a woman under Christ’s direction and authority. That can only change if God, who created the institution of marriage, is removed.

“Bible-believing Americans are not so focused on the economy or the war in Iraq that they can’t see the assault that’s being made from within the nation,” said Pastor Rod Parsley, founder and president of the Center for Moral Clarity. “If values voters were ambivalent about their participation in the political process, they shouldn’t be. More than anything else, the case in New Jersey emphasizes the urgent need for a marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Christians have to realize how important a role they play in determining the nation’s public policy.”

The good news is that the New Jersey ruling is not nearly as sweeping as the 2003 decision in Massachusetts, where the state supreme court determined that it was unconstitutional not to permit “faux marriages.” New Jersey’s decision is more like the verdict in Vermont: marriage must be expanded to include same-sex unions, or else the state must create a parallel structure that provides civil unions with the same rights.

The New Jersey judges also took the bold step of commanding the state legislature to enact new laws within 180 days. Doesn’t this sound backward? Legislators should be acting on the instructions of the citizens they represent, not a court.

The judges didn’t usurp all of the legislature’s power. They did leave it to state representatives to determine what to call the counterfeit marriages.

Holy matrimony is not completely dead in New Jersey; at least, not yet. Residents still have the option of amending the state’s constitution. The salt and light of the earth, as it is their charge, must reclaim marriage and keep it holy.

New Jersey Republican state Sen. Gerald Cardinale already has proposed a state constitutional amendment that defines marriage as between a man and a woman. He has already taken action to put the amendment before the people of New Jersey as a referendum in 2007. If you live in New Jersey, send an e-mail to Sen. Cardinale and let him know you support a marriage amendment to the state constitution.

Both California and Florida saw their petition drives to put an amendment on the ballot fail this year. Saving an institution is not an easy task. It’s no understatement that ballot initiatives require the momentum of many dedicated people in order to succeed.

    Justice Department Wimps Out

Posted by thelamp on November 6, 2006

The U.S. Justice Department has canceled its plans to create a Christian re-entry program for federal prisoners. Now lost souls that could have been saved will continue to wander in darkness because intimidation tactics of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State swayed authorities.

Earlier this year, the Justice Department said it would set up prison rehabilitation programs for six federal prisons. The plan called for a single-faith, residential re-entry cellblock at one or more pilot site prisons. The programs were supposed to be designed to “facilitate personal transformation of the participating inmates through their own spirituality and faith, and thereby reduce recidivism through promoting the virtues of productive work, respect for others, self-worth, responsibility, and accountability.”

The Center for Moral Clarity firmly endorses faith-based re-entry programs because they give inmates a strong moral foundation. It’s widely accepted that the spiritual relationship helps offenders return to society as law-abiding members of the community.

The problem with the federal prison re-entry proposal is that the cellblocks in participating prisons would have been set up as single-faith units. Any individual program could have been Jewish, Muslim, Christian or any one faith. At a conference for potential contractors, federal authorities explained that structure would allow participants to work through the particular principles of faith.

Barry Lynn, director of Americans United, waged a campaign against the Justice Department’s plan, arguing that publicly funded rehabilitation programs should be open to all inmates, not just those of one particular faith. So the government’s solution is not to create the program at all.

The Justice Department’s cowardly move follows a similar decision in Iowa, where a federal judge ruled in June that a state-funded evangelical Christian prison rehab program was unconstitutional. That case has been appealed.

Rather than face a certain court battle, the Department of Justice took the wimp’s way out and scrapped the whole program. It’s always disappointing when God’s love and helpful guidance are denied to people whose lives desperately need enrichment. Communities across the country will suffer the consequences.

Christianity Prevails at Air Force Academy

Posted by thelamp on November 6, 2006

Congratulations to the Air Force Academy. A federal judge has thrown out a lawsuit against the academy that claimed evangelical Christian values were being illegally pushed on cadets.

The case was filed by a group of Air Force Academy graduates who charged that a military chaplain violated their religious freedom rights by urging cadets to attend Christian services.

The judge, however, said the graduates could not claim their first amendment rights had been violated, since they no longer attended the academy. He also said that the group failed to give specific examples of which cadets were harmed or when.

No harm, no foul. The Center for Moral Clarity applauds the chaplain for wisely encouraging cadets to maintain a relationship with God while fulfilling their service to America. Troops defending the nation are largely Christian. They deserve the support and strength that come from a spiritual relationship.

During the last couple of years, the Air Force Academy has been troubled by accusations of insensitivity toward non-Christian cadets and staff, but an investigation conducted by the Pentagon determined officials have not committed acts of overt religious discrimination. The chaplain in question has been criticized for sending out an e-mail promoting National Prayer Day and for a memo telling cadets they are accountable first to their God.

He also allegedly urged Christian cadets to tell classmates they would burn in hell if they were not born again. Some people just can’t handle the truth. As with most scandals, though, people close to the situation have said the debate about religion among the academy’s cadets was completely blown out of proportion by the media.

Military service puts men and women in a variety of situations that require them to draw upon sound moral and ethical judgment. These men and women are training to become future military leaders who will advise, direct and influence the enlisted ranks under their command. They should be encouraged to walk with God through their tour of duty.
